Edgar Allan Poe - The Tell-Tale Heart
Insanity has been a topic of conversation since the beginning of time. Never, has it been possible to
completely understand the mind of a human being, nor understand the behaviour of every individ-
ual. However, it is possible to study and analyze behaviour and thereby look into the mind of the
people on earth. “The Tell-Tale Heart’’ is a horror story and psychological thriller told from a first-
person perspective, written as a monologue. It gives the reader an insight, usually only given to
psychologists: the opportunity of studying a mind of a man, suffering from paranoia - from total
insanity. In my opinion, “Tell-Tale Heart’’ really exemplifies Poe’s ability to expose the dark side
of humankind.
The narrator, who is also the protagonist of the story, defensively claims that he is not insane, "I
heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad?
Hearken! and observe how healthily -- how calmly I can tell you the whole story". The man insists
that the story he tells is logical and not insane at all, although the very pattern of his language is a
bit irrational, saying that he has heard heaven and hell. Moreover, the language is uncontrolled, -
rapid, built up with a great amount of small words, leaving the reader with the impression that
something is out of control.
Then the story begins, describing how the protagonist had lived with an old man, and eventually
became obsessed with one of his eyes, and how he ended up killing the man. Once again he be-
comes defensive towards the reader: "You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should
have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded -- with what caution -- with what
foresight -- with what dissimulation I went to work! I was never kinder to the old man than during
the whole week before I killed him". The narrator is obviously proud of how intelligently and cau-
tiously he managed to commit the murder, stating that a madman would not have acted as brilliantly
as he had done, since "madmen know nothing."
In the end of “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the narrator can still hear the beating of the heart, though he
has killed its owner. However, murdering the old man did not solve the protagonist’s problem after
all. He had thought that the old man's eye would leave him alone once he was slain, but now the old
man's heart consumes him. The main character is unable to stop the old man’s heart beat to solve
this problem, because the old man is already dead! The funny thing is that it is not possible for a
heart to beat when the body it inhabits has been cut apart and drained of all blood, nor is it possible
to hear someone else's heartbeat from afar in the first place. Therefore it should be obvious to any
