Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist whose goal was to fight for the rights of the black South Africans. He therefore joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944. ANC was a political party and a freedom movement who fought for equal rights for blacks and whites. In 1963 Nelson Mandela was put on a trial. He was charged for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the South African government. Nelson Mandela admitted to the charge of sabotage, but maintained his innocence on the conspiracy counts. In 1964, he was found guilty on all charged and was sentenced to life imprisonment. Meanwhile he was in prison, he brought international attention to the anti-apartheid movement and that attention was the reason he got released from prison in 1990 after serving 27 years. He became the face of the anti-apartheid movemenrt in internationally and in South Africa. The apartheid system began to fall apart and in 1994 he was the first democratically elected president of South Africa
