It happens not for every family to have a good communication which is very important for the relationship between the family members. This bad relationship could be a part to destroy a family and if there, on top in this problem, is a dress, it gets worse. It is what Julie Darling’s short story “The dress” from 2006 is about.
In the beginning of the short story the narrator is introduced the sisters and the mother. The point of view lies to Rachel who finds out that Flora has taken her dress which has a big meaning for Rachel. The dress, which is just an ordinary dress, is made of thin silk, weightless and elegant. It is light green, with golden ribbons around the hem and the neck. After that we are hearing about the mother who has birthday and she takes her daughter to a restaurant. Here is the conflict between the two sisters starting which has not a good ending. But when we look back to the mother she is a bereavement counselor and she does not have a distance to his job and family. She thinks that she can handle both of them but she cannot. It is because she is taking Rachel’s side because she is the tidy and conscientious girl. The mother is not neutral and does not solve the problem between the sisters even though she deals with her client’s problems and issues professionally. The mother wishes only a good relationship between her children but it does not happen, ”All day she had sat with tearful needy people. It was her birthday, and she wanted to relax. She wanted to feel loved” (ll. 96-97). It is what the mother long for in the short story but in the end the mother cannot take it and therefore she is drinking the rest of the wine.
The relationship between Flora and Rachel is not very good because it is characterized by jealousy disagreements. Flora, who has taken the dress, is friend with an Italian boy named Alberto. Flora has jealous on her sister, Rachel, who has bought the dress to the mother birthday. In other words Flora is jealous on her sister’s identity and she needs to be as her, but he cannot say it. On the other hand we have Rachel who tries to identify with her mother by being very tidy and she has the mother on her side. She does not communicate with Flora when she finds out that she has taken the dress. She communicates with Flora through her mother who asks Flora about the dress. Following the conflict is starting and through replies we are see the relationship between them. When the mother asks about the dress Flora is ignored her and she says that she has not take the dress. She wills not talking about it because it is her mother’s birthday but in the reality she is afraid for her. When they are at home Rachel says that she is going to her father but the mother is protested. The mother is asking for the last time Flora who says that she has taking the dress. Here comes the jealousy is coming forward because Flora takes it because of it is very pretty and she likes then.
The short story “The dress” is written in the past and in the beginning is the point of view to Rachel who finds out that her dress is stolen. It continues to the family are in the restaurant because of the birthday and the mother does not know anything about the matter. Rachel says that Flora has taken her dress and the conflict is starting. In the ending Rachel is going when Flora discloses that she has taking the dress and Flora is alone. The mother is angry because she cannot handle the conflict and in the ending the point of view changes. The point of view lies to Flora who buries the dress. Although the timeline in the short story “The dress” is chronological.
The dress is the symbol in the short story which is destroyed the family and the relationship between the sisters. This ordinary dress is a part of the jealousy and the problem and it is in the ending the reason to the family are divide. It has a big meaning for Rachel and also for Flora whose have a very bad communication, “It was only a dress, she thought, hardly a matter o life and death” (ll. 189-190). It is what the symbol results in because it is a question about life and death for her. It is the dress’ fault that Rachel is going.
The theme in the short story “The dress” is jealousy and the dress which has result in this division between the families. But Flora tries to lay the dress away when she is buried the dress, “And the dress lay in the tired earth, smelling of dead birds in the porch in an empty house, and was forgotten” (ll. 198-199). Flora actually tries to push the past aside because she feels herself guilty but it is late now.
