Hey, mundtlig eksamen imorgen! Vi har 5 min. til den vedlagte fremlæggelse. Hvis nogen har tid og vil så vil jeg være taknemmelig for rettelser!!

Prejudices

Okay, I want to talk about prejudices. I have chosen this subject, because it’s in my interest how people get separated by these thoughts and judgements, and basically how the prejudices are constructed.

So, the central problem is that our present-day society is multiethnic, and if we separate ourselves by national or racial prejudices, we have several problems with communication, trading, trust and crime.

I think we should take a look at the definition of a prejudice:

A prejudice isn’t something you are born with, it’s something you learn. It’s described as an unreasonable opinion regarding a racial, religious, or national group.

Many persons begin to predict prejudices in their childhood, because their parents, teachers or maybe friends have some influence on them. If they later get confirmed in these thoughts by experiences, I believe, it’s difficult to turn these persons back to reality.

In the few examples of extreme prejudices we have, they develop in the local communities. It’s often places with narrow, limited information.
In the past it was much easier to make a “closed” community with propaganda, because the media wasn’t increased, like it is today. Today people only expose themselves for manipulation; because they only receive the information they want to receive. You’ll often see these people as simpleton and headstrong persons.

2 To define a stereotype, it’s a description of a people or group.
Somebody may be saying that Americans are self-important, that Jews are focused on money and Negroes are less intelligent than other people.

The funny thing here is that every single example I’ve selected isn’t a prejudging description of “my people”. So when we stereotype it’s based on fear and the differences. And the bad thing is that we take the victims right to define itself.

I believe, we are stereotyping, to get an overview, in our stressful world. We don’t think about it, as a negative act, but doing it, because we don’t have time to see the single individual anymore and then we just put people in these “boxes”, because it’s easier.

3 – Reasons for lack of integration in USA, England and Denmark.

During our class trip in London, we could actually see that an integration of many different ethnical groups can work. People were living side by side, without any visible problems at all.

The community in the US is based on money. I don’t know if that is a prejudice, but their education- and medical system is based on private finances.
That means people get split by their money, and it doesn’t help the integration. As a matter of course the most refugees don’t have a lot of money, when they immigrant in another country. And if the Americans collect their lack of payment with their different skin colour, we’ve got a prejudice. In the worst form refugees may steal and beg because of their poor; then some properly would collect the refugees with criminals. The integration doesn’t work if we oppose it with prejudices.

In Denmark the only lack of integration is in our nationalism. We want refugees to be just as ourselves, and then the problem starts. As a result of the missing understanding for different cultures and the paranoid feelings, we often see children of refugees together in groups, and it isn’t here we can help the integration.

4 – The victims of prejudices: So, whose are the victims of prejudices?

The victims are the ones who predict the prejudices.

In bad conditions you will underachieve by prejudicing. As an example; top students, from the university Stanford in California, were exposed for an experiment. They were been told, that they should exceed this test. In the first incident the students were been told that the test was without any importance. In the second case, they were been informed, that it was an intelligence test. And guess what, in the last case, the students underachieved.

So, the ones who predict prejudices are victims, but what about these who are exposed for prejudices?

Well, we see plenty of trials, where people have been discarded because of their sexuality or skin colour. I think that’s a fine example of some of the victims.

5 – Solution:

So, how do reduce prejudices?

Well, I think we should fight this with humour. We need to look at our self before judging other people. We have to be more open-minded and able to laugh at ourselves.

I believe we integrate better, if we have a larger knowledge about other cultures. In the end other nationalities aren’t that different from ours, and I think we should learn that by information.
