Prison Life on Robben Island
(1961 - 1988)

The prison life was very difficult for Nelson Mandela. There were four categories of prisoner.
He was one of them with the fewest privileges. In wintertime the prison was cold.
The prisoner wore shorts and sandals, with no sacks and underwear!
There was no water and no toilet, only a bucket.
The prisoners woke at 5:30 am, and their meal wasn’t enjoyable. .
There was a little chance of talking to another prisoner.
Prisoners were allowed to write and receive a family letter, with only 500 words every six moth.
There was one privilege which they were allowed, the chance to study.
They had to pay for the books, and certain subjects were forbidden.
The prison became known as “Mandela University”.
In 1968 Nelson’s mother and sister visited him, together with his son Makgatho and daughter Makaziwe. It was the last time he saw his mother; she died a few weeks later.
After a couple of years his wife was arrested and imprisoned for 17 months for being an ANC member, and his son died in a car crash!
In 1970 a British Member of Parliament, Denis Hailey, visited Nelson Mandela
He was surprised to see how well Nelson was. Nelson was respected by the prison warders.
The prison conditions began to improve; they got better diet and clothing.
Many prisoners thought of escaping, and one day in 1974, under heavy guard, Nelson and two others managed to get to a dentist in Cape Town. They saw no cars outside and realized that it was a trap. If they’d escaped, they would have been shot dead.
In 1976 the Minister of Justice, Jimmy Kruger, visited Nelson Mandela and said that if he supported the Government’s policy on apartheid, he could go free. Nelson Mandela refused, but in the same year the children of Soweto began protesting at their poor educations. The police opened a fire and killed a thirteen year old and many others. A couple of moths after the uprising a number of young Soweto prisoners arrived to Robben Island. Nelson Mandela was excited to know that the young people of Soweto were fighting for there freedom and democracy.
A year later Nelsons wife was sent to internal exile and was forbidden to speak about politics. They had two daughters, which Winnie had to take care of. A year later, one of his daughters got married with a Swaziland prince.
They and their new born baby were allowed to visit him in jail. Nelson Mandela and his daughter held each other for a long time, and Nelson played with the little baby.
A couple of other improvements followed. The prisoners were allowed to watch films, and in 1979 the Africans were allowed the same diet as the coloreds and the Indians.
One day 1982, Nelson Mandela was told to pack his things and leave the island after eighteen years.
He was 63 years old; together with two others he was to move to Polls Moore prison.
Mandela didn’t know why???
