Mrs Churchill got a hold of the train guard, who turned out to be quick and resourceful.

There was no use in stopping the train, which was full of travellers;

he did, however, know that there was a block post halfway between Birmingham and Worchester with a bright railway operator named Westwood, and the train would pass this place in a couple of minutes.

The train guard had Mrs Churchill write down a message on a piece of paper.

He took the paper, wrapped it around a penny, and the moment the train passed the block post, he threw Mrs Churchil's message out the window.

Westwood picked up the piece of paper.

Tell Vera that the rice pudding is in the own, the message said, and at the bottom there was a phone number to Birmingham.

A couple of minutes later, the phone rang in Vera's office and a strange voice gave the quite peculiar message to the surprised young lady.

However, as soon as she realized what is was all about, she hurried home and managed to get the pudding out of the own before it was too late.
