Winton urges push towards sustainable fishing

Award-winning author Tim Winton is urging the Federal Government to push ahead with plans for a new national network of marine parks.

Environment Minister Tony Burke is expected to announce the boundaries of protected Commonwealth waters next month.

Some Coalition MPs and commercial fishermen fear jobs will be lost, but Winton says linking marine parks is broadly popular.

Mr Winton hosted a seafood barbeque with politicians at Parliament House on Wednesday night to convince them of the importance of ocean protection.

The renowned angler told ABC radio's PM http://www.oddwatches.com  that the Australian way of life is at stake.

"We're the envy of the world in that we can have this engagement with the outside world," he said.

"We live on the veranda of the world's greatest island and it's our birthright to be able to have a clean ocean, to be able to catch a feed, to be able to have interaction with nature."

Commercial fishermen say the proposed marine-park network could ruin their livelihoods.

Winton admits it is understandable that fishermen feel threatened when they have not seen the details, but he says balance has been sought to accommodate both commercial and environmental interests.

"I'm a fishing person, I live in a fishing community, all my neighbours are commercial fishers. I get that," he said.

"Some people I know are happy to be bought out only if they are bought out - and I understand this - on proper terms and treated with dignity."

Winton admits he did not always have a sustainable view towards fishing, but he says it is time to consider what will be left for future generations.

"We grew up with an idea that the ocean was an endless reservoir of stuff that we could continue to take from without consequence," he said.

"In my own lifetime the yardstick is pretty simple. I measure it against what my father and his parents had in terms of a viable resource, what they could see, what they could count, what they could catch - because I come from a fishing family.

"There's a big cap in quality and in quantity. I know that as a recreational fisherman and we're all on the beach getting bigger and bigger boats with more equipment to go further and further in order to catch less."

Hvad har det med noget at gøre, og hvorfor skulle det gentages tre gange?
