The patriot game - rettelse af stil

20. maj 2008 af malomalou (Slettet)
jeg ved godt den er lidt lang - men håber der er nogle der vil kigge den igennem? :)- det er en analyse af en sang ved navn "the patriot game"

The song is written by Dominic Behan. It tells the story of Fergal O'Hanlon, who was an IRA Volunteer from Monaghan, which is a country bordering on Northern Ireland. Monaghan was known for strong republican activities.
The song’s writer Dominic Behan was born in inner-city Dublin into an educated working class family. His father was Stephen Behan, who fought for the IRA as one of Michael Collins' "Twelve Apostles", who were responsible for the deaths of several officers from the British Army during the Irish War of Independence.
The speaker is the voice speaking in the song. But as in “The Patriot Game” is the speaker not necessarily the author. In the song can the speaker not be Dominis Behan because Behan was born in 1962 and the song builds on an incident on New Years Eve in 1957. Therefore can Behan only be the author of the song. You can also see that Behan is not the speaker because the speaker is one of the rebels from the event and Behan was not on of them, e.g. can you see Fergal O`Hanlon is speaking in stanza two where he is saying; “My name is O`Hanlon…”.
The speaker is talking to the other young rebels and in the first stanza is he saying; “Come all young rebels and list while I sing”. The tone of voice of the speaker is very brutal and the mood is sad and warning because the other young rebels have to be careful and thoughtful before they get mixed out in something they perhaps cannot handle.
The song has seven stanzas and there are four lines in each. The first and the second line rhymes as well as the third and the last line rhymes in every stanza in the song.
And therefore the rhyme scheme looks like this in the song: AABB

Here is an example for one of the stanzas.

Come all young rebels and list while I sing A
For love of one’s land is a terrible thing A
It banishes fear with the speed of a flame B
And makes us all part of the Patriot game B
The themes of the song are things like life vs. death and freedom vs. captivity.
The song is about an incident that happened on New Year’s Eve in 1957 where two young IRA men were killed during a raid of police barracks. One of them were Fergal O`Hanlon. He was only 19 when he died. The song “The Patriot Game” is being told from Fergal O`Hanlons point of view.
O`Hanlon is talking about how the conflict between England and Ireland has effected him. In the first stanza he is saying that; “love of one’s land is a terrible thing it banishes fear with the speed of a flame”. With that he means that if you have faith and love to your land you can do everything because it overshadows everything else. And in the second stanza he is talking about how he during his whole life have been learnt to blame England for the troubles in Ireland. In the following stanzas is he talking about how the republican heroes have been represented and that he wanted to do the same thing as them. He thinks that Ireland has been separated far too long and he means that that has something to do with De Valera because he has not been taken his part of “the Patriot Game”.

In the song concludes O`Hanlon with the point that he have not had second thoughts about what he did. He just wishes that he had done the same thing that hat been done to him to the people that bargain and sold the land of Ireland. “I’m sorry my riffle has not done the same for the Quislings who sold out the Patriot game”.
