How did the country develop?

What was the Civil War about?
The American Civil War (1861–1865) was a sectional conflict in the United States of America between the federal government (the "Union") and eleven Southern slave states that declared their secession and formed the Confederate States of America, led by President Jefferson Davis.

Where did the immigrants come from in the 19th and 20th centuries?

Nogen der kan hjælpe med spørgsmålene?

The Civil War was a question of economics. The northern part of the Union was "modern" and importing almost 100% of goods for the both the North and the South. The North wanted the South to move away from cotton and tobacco and modernize into a factory based system. Slavery was a side issue...a domino in the large issue at stake.

My grandparents on my mothers side immigrated for Italy (1904) and my grandmothers family on my fathers side immigrated from ireland during the great potato family in 1845. There was a huge influx of immigrants from Europe starting in the early 1800's all the way through; 1930. Also, the chinese came in large numbers...go search your family name on: http://www.ellisisland.org

The African American Experience.

· The assimilation of white ethnic groups were much more successful than for nonwhite groups. (for example the African Americans)
· The African Americans were forced to the United States, and were to be sold as black slaves
· Other groups came to America because they wanted to make a better living for themselves.

Enslavement divided the United States
· The southern states and the northern states.
· The southern states believed that slavery was their basis of their economy
The northern states made slavery against the law, a minority group of whites thought that slavery and freedom could not exist together in a free country and they wanted slavery abolished. A larger group of whites thought of freedom and equality of opportunity to be for whites only, but they were afraid that the black slavery somehow could take away their economic freedom.

Abraham Lincoln was president in 1860?……. He had the gift of being able to appeal to the two groups of whites. The first group was whites who thought that slavery was injustice to African Americans, the second group was the ones who thought of slavery as a threat.
Southern states left the union in 1960 and they tried to form a new nation which was based on slavery. This resulted in a civil war, between south and north (1961-1965)
North won the war, black slavery ended in the United States.
Even thought the war ended, whites had still prejudice against the blacks, in the south as well as in the north. It was impossible for the blacks to compete in the white dominated society. Blacks were still legally segregated from whites, they could not vote or tend to white public schools.

In 1954 the Supreme Court in the United States decided that racially segregated public schools were illegal, because the blacks did not have the same opportunities as whites of getting a good education, which was wrong.

Martin Luther King Jr. was the most important of black leaders. He was a protestant, who led people to join in on non-violent demonstrations and marches from the late 1950s until 1968, when he was assassinated by a white man. He wanted for the blacks to be more involved in the American society.

A man who differed quite a bit from King was Malcolm x. He wanted for the blacks and whites to segregate, because he thought that American values were ”White men’s values”, and he saw Christianity as white religion. Therefore he became leader of ”Black Muslim”(founded 1930)

In 1960 two civil right laws were made, it were:
· Illegal to segregate public facilities
· Illegal to deny black people the right to vote in elections.
A federal program was established at it contains these two things:
· Requiring employers to seek black workers
· Universities, to accept black students

Today blacks are Mayors and members of congress. In 1991 Clarence Thomas was the second African American who became a Supreme Court justice.

Bush chose Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell to work for him, and they are both blacks. Most whites would even prefer an African American as president. Today African Americans have risen from being poor, to becoming a sizable and growing middle class, some even of great wealth.

Håber det kan hjælpe lidt...
