This paper examines the scientific environment in Athens and the reasons for the large development in science, especially math, which happened in Alexandria in ancient times. During the period 500 – 300 BC in Athens the scientific environment expanded and the Greeks started studying a lot of different sciences. Their view of the world changed slowly, and their beliefs on their Gods changed.
During the period 300 – 200 BC the science moved from Athens to Alexandria. It reached a level that no one at that time had ever seen. It took several hundred of years before science started to “grow” once again. The enormous Museion and its library was one of the reasons for this development. Through an analysis of Plato’s and Aristotle’s worldview (verdenssyn) the study looks on math and logics influence on how the world was seen in the Antique world.
The paper discusses the reasons for the development in Greek science in the Hellenistic age, and what kind of affect the mathematic Euclid had on our view upon math today. It is concluded that the Greek science had an affect on the world back then and still has over two thousand years later.
