Abstract
This paper examines malaria as one of the most prevalent parasitic infectious diseases in the subtropical and tropical areas of the world. Statistic data is supplied, showing that malaria, infecting about 500 million people and causing approximately one million deaths each year, mostly children and first time pregnant women from Africa, is one of the major causes of illness and mortality in the endemic areas. It is explained that malaria caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium and is thus a vector-born disease. The history of malaria is very long, and so is the list of treatments, it comes around superstitious stones to the new preparation malarone, and in between is among others the cinchona alkaloids which is not that used anymore because of the widespread resistance, the insecticide DDT and the old Chinese herb, artemisinin and its derivatives. Resistance among the parasites is today a widespread phenomenon, and the consequences are huge, new antimalarial is expensive and the pharmaceutical industry is subject to marked mechanism, and there is no money in helping Africa. The role of preventing malaria is described as consisting of to parts: the primary protection, which includes mosquito nets, insecticide treated nets ITNs, mosquito balsam and proper clothes ect. and the other part, the medical prophylaxes, which primary is used by the incoming travellers.
