Abstract - Fermat

This study examines the last theorem of the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in preparation for proving his theorem for a special case, , and furthermore discuss what the young, French mathematician Sophie Germain stood for in connection to the future proof. To obtain knowledge of understanding this study rests on empirical, historically sources including a statement of the Enlightenment with special reference to the women’s role including Sophie Germain. It investigates Sophie Germain historically as a female pattern breaker and mathematically with the question of what her mathematical work meant in the male community of mathematicians together with her work seen as a vital importance of the proof as she was the first person ever to establish a new and general strategy instead of focusing on a special case. It is shown that Sophie Germain was of great importance both for women in science and mathematics and for the mentioned theorem whereon it is concluded that society is major part in experiencing and improving.
