Abstract
This paper examines what a mono-alphabetic and a polyalphabetic cryptosystem is. It explains how it was possible for the Germans navy during World War II to keep the Enigma code a secret until 1941. The paper analyze the mathematic methods that were used to break codes until World War II, and discuss how much it meant for the British code breakers that the Royal Navy conquered an Enigma machine. The paper gives an assessment of how important it was for the Battle of the Atlantic and especially for the submarine war between 1941 and 1943 that England now had full access to the German Enigma-based communication.

Abstract
This paper examines what a mono-alphabetic and a poly-alphabetic cryptosystem is, and how you decrypt it, using cryptanalysis. An assignment to decrypt a code, made with Blaise de Vigenére’s tableau is given. The paper explains how it was possible for the German navy during World War II to keep the Enigma code a secret until 1941, when the German military organization’s(the army and Luftwaffe) Enigma machines were broken earlyer .It explains mathematics history in the world of cryptography and analyzes the mathematical methods that were used in code breaking until World War II, for example the Kasiski test and the William Friedman test. The paper discusses how much it meant to the British code breakers ability to decrypt that the Royal Navy had conquered an Enigma machine. The paper gives an assessment of the importance in the Battle of the Atlantic and especially in the submarine war between 1941 and 1943 to England of now having full access to the German Enigma-based communication.
