  Hey

What makes people happy? Is it a life filled with luxury and material comforts or a simple life without stress and with inner peace? You have to ask yourself that question before you take an opinion in the debate concerning simple living.
This essay focuses on three texts that deal with the subject of simple living.

1.
The western world is over consuming and making a lot of pollution in the progress and that’s effecting the environment, but should we all be like the Amish people and not buy stuff we don’t need, is that going to save the world and stop pollution, or is the concept of individual simple living nonsense?
The three texts “Simple Living Recession-Style”, “Shop in the name of love” and “Forget shorter showers” have very different views on the concept simple living.

Text 1 “Simple Living Recession-Style” has a neutral view on simple living. The text doesn’t say if simple living is good or bad, but it simply tells about the positive and negative things about the concept of simple living. The text states that if people get rid of all their non-essential stuff and doesn’t focus on material things, they can mere energy to focus on the important things in life, e.g. family and friendships. Simple living is a cheap way to live, there is no doubt about it, and “Simple Living Recession-Style” mentions that some people practice simple living for the financial benefits. The text is objective and it comes to the conclusion that simple living is very likely to result in less stress, stronger relationships with family and friends and more meaning in life.

Text 2 “Shop in the name of love” is an interview with an author that just published a book, where she describes a year where she only bought necessary things like food and warm clothing. The writer got the idea to take up simple living and to write the book, because she felt that she used too much energy on material things, particularly buying Christmas presents.
“Shop in the name of love” is Judith Levine’s view on simple living and she finds that over consumption and the western over consumer spending is harmful to the world, but she still keeps in mind that consuming is the foundation in a good economy. When she’s declaring that consuming is harmful she refers to the environmental consequences and the fact that the cap between rich and poor gets bigger and bigger in the USA because of over consuming. She thinks that saving the world and live simple is up the individual person. This is clear when she states: “You also can’t expect any company to make decisions that will increase their profits” . The attitude in text 2 is that you cannot expect the world to make the change you want, or as Gandhi said it, “be the change you want to see in the world”. The message in text 2 is that you shouldn’t stop consuming, but you should do it with consideration.

Text 3 “Forget shorter showers” is a contrast to “Shop in the name of love”. This is clear already when reading the title. The writer of this article talks directly to the reader and that has a positive effect, and it makes you think when you read the article.
The attitude presented in “Forget shorter showers” against simple living is very clear, that it does not matter in a larger scale, “Personal change doesn’t equal social change” . He uses the argument that companies are to blame for furthermost of the pollution, water use etc., but the writer still states that simple living can be a good thing, but mostly as a political act and as a personal choice to get rid for stress and get inner peace, not changing the world.

2.
When you make a spoken interview into a written interview, you have to make some changes, otherwise expletives and interjections is going to distract the reader, but the written interview should resemble the spoken interview as much as possible, because the message and idea with what’s being said can change if the writer uses synonyms or leaves some words out. If the person being interviewed uses sarcasm, irony or laughs after saying something the meaning with what’s being said can change totally.
In “Shop in the name of love” is laughs (laughs) also included in the writing interview, which is good, because laughing after stating something can easily give it a different meaning. Another way the spoken interview is reflected in the writing is that the whole article is created from a person’s thoughts about the subject simple living, guided by questions from the person interviewing. Filler like “well” and terms like “that said” is also a way to spot the spoken interview.

3.
Derrick Jensen “Forget Shorter Showers” states clearly that simple living and more ecofriendly choices is not going to do any good, at least not enough to make any world wide environmental changes. His argument is that most pollution and water use is consumed by corporations and companies, so individual change isn’t going to make a change, but he seems to forget the fact that consumers is the companies’ and corporations’ boss, not in a literally sheens, but the companies can’t make money of the consumers’ if they refuse to buy from companies that isn’t ego-friendly. Derrick Jensen says that shorter showers isn’t going to help the fact that the world is running out of water and off course he has a point, but if everybody, not just a few activists, but the hole western world, starts thinking and changing radically into a more environmental responsibility people, that will make a difference and a change. Derrick Jensen has some good point in that the governments and especially the companies need to change, but it’s only the consumers and the people that can make them change. There’s no upper power that can save the world from pollution and a lack of water, people need to remember that they are controlling the world.

To conclude, there is no right or wrong in the question of wheatear individual simple living is good, neutral or bad and there no easy answer to why you should take up simple living, but the world and the tree text seems to agree on one thing and that is the fact that something must be done to improve the environment.
