The country is quite huge, but the population is only about 24 million in this big country, with a large majority living in the southern part of the country.
     The native population, the Eskimos (the Inuit) and the Indians make up less than a total of two per cent of the population as such, but forming half of the population in the Northwest Territories. The rest of the population are 45 per cent of English and 28 per cent French. The rest are immi-grants from all over the world.
     With English as the most spoken language Canada has had two official languages since 1969, French and English, with the consequence that public offices and institutions must be able to serve people in the language they wish to speak. This bilingualism is probably the result of the particular rights acquired by the citizens of Quebec, when the English conquered Canada from the French. Quebec has remained a homogenous French speaking region.

     Like America Canada was “discovered” long before it was discovered. Already about the year 1000 Scandinavians were felling trees on the East coast, and in the 15th century French, Spanish and Portuguese fishermen could be seen on Newfoundland. It is believed that the name Canada is the result of a misunderstanding. The Indians used the word Kanata for settlement. This Columbus took to be the name of the country, and it has since been the official name.
     In the 17th century England and France became interested in the areas in North America not already taken in possession by the Spanish. The war between the two countries in the 18th century led to Canada falling to the English throne. After the independence of America in 1776 many American colonists, who had remained loyal to England, moved north and laid the foundation for English-dominated Canada. Aware of the threat from the strong North American states three Ca-nadian colonies formed a “Confederation” in 1867, which the other provinces were later to join. As late as in 1949 Newfoundland was annexed as a tenth province.
     The Canadian maple leaf flag in red and white is of relatively recent origin. In 1965 it replaced the Canadian Red Ensign and was proclaimed by Queen Elizabeth II, whom Canada still considered their head of state.
