Assignment 13: Paper
1.
In text 1 Yolanda Young sets the focus on the ideal of appearance in America. She writes that she felt herself invisible because of her black color. But everything has changed after Barack Obama became president, now it has become normal that people tell her that she is beautiful, and some of them also compare her with Michelle Obama. Two psychology professors have made a research in 2008, and the result was that 51% of the 300 white participant preferred white people that is absolutely not many if we compare it with the previous research result, which was 81 %. Another two psychologists made a new survey, where they asked some black children whose Barbie doll was the prettiest, the black or the white ones, and the result was that the children overwhelmingly chosed the white doll. When Obama moved into The White House, ABC’s “Good morning America” asked black children again which doll they thought was the prettiest, and only nearly half of the black girls chosed the white doll.

In text 2 Eric Holder writes about his views on how to be united and how to avoid the separation of America, he means that it is necessary that black and white Americans talk with each other about races.  To understand the America today, we must know the American history, and we must know that the black people had a big role in the development of America. So it is necessary that the Americans confront their racial past and they must talk about race, if they really want to find out which racial matters that divide them, and get a solution to it. An example is in the workplaces, where races have been mixed together, but unfortunately they still choose to be socially in separated black and white groups.

Walter Blackstrom writes about how tired he is with the obsession about race in the US in text 3. In kindergarten they learn kids about slavery, he does not understand why they teach kids in kindergarten about that. The only thing this does is making “white people feel guilty and black people feel like victims” and again separates them into black and white.  He means that every disagreement or difficulties between white and black people, becomes a racist case, but he means that it does not have to have a racial component in it. He tells about his friend who has asked him why black men do not smile any more. He answered that he has no clue, but actually black men have to smile in order not to look dangerous, but he does not want to smile any more if there is no reason to smile, which is not in the case when 50% of kids drop out of school, and the unemployment rate is at 30%.
2.
The three texts have very different language and style. We see the contrast between style and language more clearly in text 1 and 2. The language used in “Black is being seen in a whole new light” by Yolanda Young is very colorful and varied, but it is also simple ‘after Barack Obama became president and his wife, Michelle Obama, became the first lady…’ It is a language that gets the reader to identify him-/herself with the writer, so an identification method by using simple and non-formal language. As I wrote before is her language colorful and friendly, she uses imaginary WHAT?, which we see in the sentence: “For a woman the color of dark coffee to be noticed…”. She also takes the starting-point by herself, which makes the whole text more informal and personal.
In contrast to Yolanda Young, uses Eric holder a more formality language, so the speech is obviously giving to well educated people, who understand the formal and advanced language. It is also difficult to see the structure in the long sentences: “It is worthwhile endeavor for the contributions of African Americans to this great nation are numerous and significant”. So we can clearly see the contrast between these two texts, especially in its formality. Another contrast is that he focuses on the whole nation’s information, besides Yolanda who only analyses the attitude to black women’s appearance.

It is very difficult to find a solution to the issue, and how to get the race play a less role. But my opinion is that Eric Holder is right, I think that it is important to get black and white Americans to talk to each other, but not only about race, I don’t think that the conversations only have to deal with races. It is true that the African Americans for many years have been discriminated, and Eric Holder says that they should talk about what happened in the US before and how they have been separated because of their races, I don’t agree with that.
Walter Blackstrom has a good point by saying that it is not necessary to tell kids in kindergarten about how they have been separated in the past because of their race. Instead of learning kids about the separation in races, they should better learn them that the color of their skin is not important. It will take long time, but maybe it will change the general attitude towards race.
