The beach was filled with happy people (who were) enjoying the sun. Suddenly someone shouted, "Watch out for the dog!/Beware the dog!", while pointing at an Alsatian that came running along the beach with froth at the mouth. Parents grabbed children, who had been playing in the sand, and headed for their cars. A lifeguard, who had seen everything, approached to the people who were persecuting the dog with sticks and stones. When they had almost caught up with the dog, whose tongue was (by) now also covered in sand, a little boy suddenly ran in front of the dog. Everyone was terrified, but the boy, his face pale with fear,  hugged the dog. “Please don't hurt my dog", he shouted, "it hasn't done anything (wrong)!"

(All) the men, (who were now) all out of breath, tried to get the boy away from the dog, whose mouth was much bigger than the boy's head. "It's rabid!", they shouted. “No”, the boy whimpered, "it has eaten our soap and only wants to have some of the water I just got for him." Those who had chased the dog were very embarrassed, which was quite understandable.

Forbandelsen ved at oversætte er at man som oftest skal være lojal mod originalteksten, hvor hovsaagtig den end måtte være. Jeg studsede lidt over "forældre greb fat i børn, som legede i sandet (...)" -- man får det indtryk at ikke nærmere definerede forældre griber fat i første bedste børn de ser, og ikke nødvendigvis deres egne. Jeg ville foretrække "forældre(-ne) greb fat i deres børn" = "(the) parents grabbed (hold of) their children" og foreslår dig at bruge denne form, også om det udløser en debat i klassen.

...beach,frothing at the mouth...

persecuting could be changed to chased ....and stones for pebbles (as they are on a beach)

......tried to pull the boy away from the dog...

"It's mad!", they shouted...

You're right that pebbles are more 'beach-relevant', as it were. I, however, had the fixed, somewhat Biblical, expression sticks and stones in mind, which, in retrospect and considering the context, may not have been the wisest decision I've ever made.

Chased vs persecuted -- no argument there. After all, there's the colourful expression; "keep it simple, stupid." Ergo, my bad. Persecuted would be appropriate if it referenced aggression against an ethnic group (eg HItler's persecution of the Jews), but in connection with a fictitious dog on some equally made-up hula-hula beach? I think not.

Mad vs rabid...tomayto, tomahto, at the end of the day. That said, I suppose one is much more likely to come across mad in everyday conversation (and everyday writing).

Alas, that's the scurge of translating; one must constantly and always think on behalf of two people: one's own and that of the writer of the material one's translating.
