Genesis and catastrophe

Many people find it hard to make a decisions based on what they read or se, because of the influence from the surroundings. Nowadays people are less opinionated, because they go along with what their friends think. Just like the short story ‘’Genesis and Catastrophe’’ written by Roald Dahl, where the reader is forced to decide if the boy should die or live? There are two sides of the story, which gives the reader to choose what is morally correct.

We know we are forced to be observant because there is written that it’s ‘’a True story’’. It gives at serious and more dramatic prelude. Already in the beginning we start to wonder about the story’s action. The title represents the action, and tells us that the catastrophe is the consequence of the genesis, or the genesis has caused the catastrophe. In between the lines we know that the baby boy is the ‘’Genesis and Catastrophe’’.

He is the child of a woman, who is given the name Klara. She is the protagonist and has already lost her last three children, after their birth.  The three previous children where named Otto, Gustav and Ida and now has she born a baby boy again. When she sees him, she fears that he doesn’t going to live, because he is small and sickly looking. She keeps rethinking the past, about how beautiful the other children were. The doctor listens to her and tries to cheers her up. The doctor hasn’t seen her before, because Klara and her husband are new in town. She tells the doctor that the boy must live. The husband, Alois compares the new small and frail baby, with the others babies.  He is drunk and comments, that the baby is weak looking, even though the doctor assures him the baby is healthy. Opposite the drunkard husband, she is gentle and a religious woman.

Klara is still begging for God’s mercy to let her son live. She is frightened by the husband’s reaction because of the way her husband treats her so coldly, and that gives us the feeling, that the husband is mean. We know the mother is having at hard time emotionally, when Dahl describes the way she cries and praying. She is having a uneasy time believing the doctor, because she has somehow lost the faith. By looking at her pale exhausted face, the doctor kept telling trying to calm her down. The reader feels sympathy with the parent, until the name of the child is revealed. The newborn boy is named Adolf Hitler and at this point the short story’s mood changes. First we just wanted the baby to live, but then we start to doubt what to feel, because Hitler is known for being a previous Nazi politician who killed thousands of people. We know that this man is responsible for killing numerous of innocent people. Then we start to wonder if its better that the baby never has being born.

In this situation we are forced to decide the fact of what is morally correct to choose. Even though our decision can’t change the past, we wish to have the opportunity to travel back in time and change a little detail which has caused something remarkable. Maybe if little Adolf Hitler hasn’t turned into a horrible person, we would have cared less. Something else to notice in the short story is that the size of a person doesn’t matter. We see that all the other healthy looking children have died, compared with the weak boy, who end up being one of the most powerful men in the world.  We could ask ourselves if the baby shouldn’t being born, because why is it fair for the mother to lose another child. She deserves a child just like every other parent.
