Even for a definite known person of known sex, they may be used in order to ignore or conceal the sex.

"The student" er ikke en udefineret størrelse. Der kan ikke være tale om "he or she". Vedkommende kender sikkert sit eget køn. 

Sætninger som  a)  "The student said that they were good at tennis"  og  b)  "The student said that he or she was good at tennis"  er rent nonsens hvis studenten taler om sig selv.

Alt det du har hentet fra internettet, bruger du blot helt ufordøjet og ugennemtænkt.

Ordet student i vores tilfælde" er ikke brugt "generically" eller "of any member of that class or a specific member unknown to the speaker or writer". Man ved helt præcist hvem denne student er (i vores tilifælde også af hvilket køn). Vedkommende er ikke a member of a class.
