It’s probably only Peeping Tom who can claim to have seen Lady Godiva ride nude through the streets of Coventry. The story was not really known until a hundred years after Lady Godiva’s death in 1067. It’s as if the thought of the pious beauty who rode nude through the town has haunted the English imagination ever since. Since it’s such a long time ago it’s difficult to know what Lady Godiva actually did, in order for her name to be remembered for more than 900 years.
Lady Godiva was married to Earl Leofric, and she was considered to be (both) wise, religious, and charitable. Leofric was not so well-liked among the townsmen as his wife, because he neither shared her piety nor her charity. When he needed large amounts of money, he would tax the inhabitants of Coventry heavily.
When Lady Godiva asked her husband not to do this, he answered – according to the legend which perhaps isn’t far from the truth – that he wouldn’t end this heavy taxation until she had ridden nude through Coventry on the fair day; for he was certain that this virtuous woman would never do it.
Whether you believe it or not, it seems to be a fact: Lady Godiva rode nude across the market place. Though most of the townsmen of Coventry were gathered there, no one saw anything but her face and her beautiful legs because her long hair covered her body as if it was a garment. At first Leofric was tremendously furious over the episode, but then he learned that no one had seen his wife’s naked body, because of her long hair, and he immediately lifted the taxation.
The first narrative about Lady Godiva’s unusual ride was written down by two monks in the 13th century, and in the 16th century the story of Godiva’s ride underwent an alteration. It was said that Godiva had asked messengers to say that all the townsmen should stay indoors and close their windows on the appointed day. All the inhabitants of
Coventry did with pleasure what they had been asked for, because she was so popular and the taxpayers would win by her heroic act.
Not until the 17th century was the man mentioned who would be just as famous as Lady
Godiva herself – Peeping Tom. He is said to have seen Lady Godiva when she rode nude through the town, and he seems to have been struck blind as a punishment.
