San Francisco
San Francisco is a wonderful city, which lies beautifully on the San Francisco Bay. Many of the city’s streets are incredibly precipitous so one have to be a exceptionally good driver to drive safely around in the undulating city. The San Franciscans is very proud of having “The Crookedest Street in the World.”
For many years, the old streetcar has been the big tourist attraction. You have simply been in San Francisco if have not been gone for a ride with the Cable Car.
Another must when one is in San Francisco is to visit the prison on Alcatraz, a little island in the bay. The jail was closed by the Attorney General, Robert Kennedy in the sixties, and the buildings certainly do not look cosy at all. But the view from the prison at the Golden Gate Bridge in the west and to San Francisco in the south is quite unique.
In 1906 the city experienced a tremendous earthquake, which immediately started an awful fire. Many of the beautifully painted wooden houses burned to the ground. But since then, the citizens have daringly rebuilt the city, and recently they have started to build enormously high skyscrapers. So far San Francisco can not pride itself of any quite as high as the Sears Tower in Chicago and New York’s World Trade Center.
However an earthquake as bad as the one in 1906 can easily hit the city again, as it unfortunately is located on the Andreas Fault.
