Sitting Bull
Sitting Bull was one of the famous Indian chiefs in North America. He was born about 1834 and belonged to the Hunkpapa Teton Sioux, who lived on the prairie.
In his youth Sitting Bull decided to fight the White and he never changed his mind. After the fight in 1865 on the Power river, where a lot of his men lost their lives, he after all realised that all of their courage and fighting spirit was wasted if the only had bow and arrow to fight with; the difference between the soldiers’ and the Indians’ weapons were too big.
The Indians simply wished to live in peace and The Great Father, as the president of the USA is called, also promised it time and time again, but his promises were not kept. One of the best-known examples is the battle of the Black Hills. In a treaty from 1869 it said that this holly area belonged to the Indians. But four years later, as there was found gold, more than thousand Whites were soon on their way to the area. Vainly the Indians protested and refuse to sell the area, and in 1876 the war which the Indians lost, began. But they won an important battle at the river Little Bighorn.
One of general Custer’s officers succeeded in surprising Sitting Bull’s camp, but Sitting Bull did not lose his head. He quickly gathered his men and Custer’s army was completely defeated. General Custer or “Long Hair”, as he is called by his enemies, was afterwards found with a great deal of wounds on the body.
