The Irish republic became independent in 1922 but the north of the island became not a part of the new state. In the six northeastern counties were there a majority to remain a part of The United Kingdom because the greater part of the population was Protestants. Most of the Irish are Catholics but in Northern Ireland have many Scottish and English Protestants immigrated over the years. They did not wish to be a minority in a united Ireland which was dominated by the Catholic Church.
Since 1922, has Northern Ireland been managed by the Protestant population. The religion is still not the only thing which separates the two groups. There are also important social- and financial differences; there are more poor people among the Catholics and also more unemployed people.
In Londonderry august 1969 began a bigger group of young Catholics to throw stones against a Protestant demonstration; this was the beginning of three days with disturbances which is called the Battle of Bogside. Also in other towns there had been collisions and the English government had to use the British army to avoid a civil war.
In the beginning the British army was looked on as the Catholics protectors but after a short period many thought that it rather kept the Protestants in power.
