Danish mediocrity

“In this country we no longer have artists ranking among the best in the world”, the owner of an international well-known Danish gallery claims.
He believes that the Welfare State and especially the Social Democratic Party are responsible for the artists’ low standard in Denmark. As a Danish artist you almost can’t avoid to survive, he claims. It’s not necessary to do your best to scratch a bare living.
“The old Danish masters went out into the world to learn an to get new impressions, but that’s no longer in fashion and it’s not necessary. This is the reason why that we haven’t had a world-famous artist since Asger Jorn,” the gallery owner thinks.
He wants more competition among the artists as we know it from the US. Only like that way a country can produce really good artists because everybody needs to their best not to get overlooked or forgotten.
There is also a big difference in that way you present art here, and in the US, he believes. The galleries over there are often bare rooms with neon lights. It’s the work of arts which are the most important.
In this country the galleries have become comfortable living rooms with thick blankets and couches.
