”My Son the Fanatic”

The story deals with problems of different values and customs of modern society in many ways. Parvez a taxi driver from Lahore in Pakistan, is the main character. Parvez is opposite of his son Ali, because he is well integrated in the British society and lives as an modern ”Euro-Muslim”. He has forgotten the Islamic traditions, and lives by the Western values and norms. He drinks whisky, eat sausages and has a relationship to a prostitute, which is not allowed according to the Muslim principles.
The clash between the Islamic and western norms is illustrated by the relationship between the main character Parvez who represent Western values and his son Ali represent by suddenly converting from a typical western teenage life to an life as an young Imam. Parvez cannot see why his son has made these radical life changes, and Ali thinks his father is too implicated in Western civilisation and says, that his father is going to hell.
I think it is important too refer to, Tariq Ramadan’s article ”You Can’t Go Home Again” because it deals with the same problems but in his article it is the parents who do not wish to be integrated into the European environment. Tariq Ramadan points out that is important too respect Islamic principles while adopting the European tastes and styles. And that is where the problem may be, the main character Parvez has adopt European norms but do not respect Islam for example he and his colleagues made jokes about the local mullahs. Meanwhile his son Ali is opposite, he feel that the Western materialist hate him, and therefore he cannot and would not adopt to their norms or values anymore.
Why is it that when a Muslim adopt to the European culture, other Muslims do not accept him as an part of the Muslim society?
Is religion stronger than the family ?
These are some of the questions the article by Tariq Ramadan ” You Can’t Go Home Again” and the story ”My son the Fanatic” raises.
As an young individual in a global and modern world it can sometimes be difficult to understand this clash between religions, but especially in these days where the Danish newspaper JP, has reached worldwide attention, by drawing 12 satirical drawings of the prophet Muhammad. These drawing could be seen as persecution of the Muslim people. As Ali said to his father in the text that he would gladly give his life
To stop the persecution against his people. It is alarming to know that we live in world, where 12 drawings can cost human lives, and knowing that Ali could be one of the ”martyrs” are unbelievable.
