Sucker:
Pete: 16 years old, goes to college, lives at home with his parents and younger siblings. Adores Maybelle. His behavior depends on how other people treat him – when Maybelle seems to care about him, he acts a lot friendlier towards Sucker, and, on the contrary, when Maybelle dumps him he takes all his anger out on Sucker. Described as fairly mediocre in school.
Sucker/Richard: Orphaned when he was a baby, adopted by Pete’s parents (cousin to Pete). 12 years old, uses glasses, Pete’s worn-out clothing, a “face with the look of a kid who is watching a game and waiting to be asked to play”. Has no real friends, a loner, lives in his own world (wants to get away). Maybe afraid to commit himself. Changes dramatically when Pete’s begins to accept him and treat him as a buddy. Looks up to Pete (like Pete looks up to Maybelle), not as an equal, but as an older brother or father, and wants love and accept. Maybe needs someone to act like the father/mother he has never had.
Then, when Pete turns his back on him and scolds him, it shows him that the world really is a cold, rough place, where noone cares about you. He becomes cold and agressive – creates a hard shell around a fragile personality - , and wants to get away from everything (i.e. becoming a pelt-hunter).
Maybelle: 18 years old, blond, the girl every guy wants to get his hands on. Can get whoever she wants, and takes advantage of it – uses Pete to get cigarettes and her homework done, but does not care about him at all. Leaves Pete as soon as an older, more interesting guy appears.
When Maybelle dumps Pete, he needs to find a way to take it out on – and instead of doing it on Maybelle, he chooses Sucker.
