Summary of “Indian Camp”
Nick, Nick’s father and Uncle George, has been called away from a fishing trip, to an Indian Camp, where an Indian lady is in big labour. They are escorted by two Indian men.
When they arrive, they go into a little shanty, where the woman lays in the lower bunk, and the husband in the upper bunk. The women is screaming like crazy, because the baby is trying to come out with its head first. The husband is pressing his body against the wall.
Nicks father tries explains birth to Nick, teaching him.
Nicks father decides to cut her open, and take the baby out. He uses his fishing equipments, to do this. The woman isn’t giving any painkillers. Nick mentally freaks out, but he hides it from his dad. The baby comes out alright, and Nick’s father is glowing a little. But when Nick’s father looks at the upper bunk, the husband has committed suicide, while Nick was watching.
On the way back, Nick starts asking a lot of questions regarding life and death. He and his father have a very sentimental chat, and at the end Nick feels like he’ll never die.
