In some countries, weddings for teenagers are not unusual. A girl called Tabatha was only twelve years old when she got married. She lives in a shed with seven other people in two small rooms. She lives in Horse Creek, Clay County, 600 km from Washington D.C.
Now Tabatha is 17 years old, and should soon be a wife for the second time with Michael who is the father of her second child. Her first married didn’t go very well. She married an 18-year-old man called Dennis who was really nice to her. They were going out, and they got married five months later, the reason why Tabatha would get married is caused by they had slept together and she would like to drop out of school. Tabatha continued living at home and Denis visited her once in a while. It turned out Denis wasn’t that good for Tabatha – he was very jealous. He wouldn’t let her work on McDonalds, and he wouldn’t leave her alone.
The school in Clay County has a day nursery for the teenagers children. The day nursery should take care of the children while the students are in school. In that way the girls can go to school, and they don’t have to stay home to take care of their children. A lot of girls get married because they believe they would achieve more independence, and they can do whatever they want. If they have a bad family-life, they see the marriage as a way to escape, and the parents would happily see their daughters get married, cause in that way they would not have children outside the marriage. According to the law, the children have to go in school until they are 17 years old, but if a girl get married is it the husbands responsibility to take care of the girl.
