Inuits in cyberspace

In her article Inuit in cyberspace, Line Reeh talks mainly about Inuit’s communicating beyond the long distances, and defining their culture.

The citizens in Pond Inlet use the internet instead of travelling physically, for instance, to sell their local handicrafts, and to get all the information’s they need.

The reason, they try to break some of the isolation, is that it is challenging to interact with other people when there is only a tiny population, and a land as huge as West Europe. The internet in Nunavut means more to the people then just being a tool. It is about being heard having a voice to the rest of the world.

Nunavut haven’t completely found itself as a society. From being oppressed by Canada they now have their own flag, own government, and parliament. They want to develop their personal identity.

Lately the development has been moving so fast it is hard to say what a Inuit, in fact, is. Line Reeh put it this way (p. 2) “That you have a need to discuss, and define who you are is not odd if you, take into account, how much life in Nunavut has changed on a small amount of years.”

They try to set up computers on public places, like schools, because it is too expensive for private households to have a internet connection. The author argues that children this way can be more aware of their culture, and make them more proud of who they are, and where they come from.
