One of Hollywood’s oldest themes which has been known since early times was yet again brought into play in Kevin Costner’s motion picture “Dancing with Wolves” from 1990.
The main character in movie John Dunbar, who is played by Costner himself, becomes the hero of the day when he displays exceptional heroism in one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War. His heroism is rewarded with a transfer. After two weeks journey he finally reaches the American Frontier, a deserted fort on the prairie. At the beginning his only companion is a wolf. However, after a few days with solitude he is visited by two chiefs/leaders from the Lakota tribe. His efforts to establish contact and friendship with these natives are portrayed picturesque through both the picture and the sound of the movie. When talking about the sound is should also be mentioned that the language of the Indians is in fact their own and not English. The critics’ reactions to the movie have been mixed from condemnation to admiration. After the final of the movie the viewers are left with one question: is this America’s new way of seeing the Indians or is it simply a continuation of the John Ford westerns? One fact remains clear Costner’s movie received not less than 7 of Hollywood’s desirable Oscar statuettes.
