Hvem styrer landet i denne peri-ode?

President of the United States

The American president is elected every fourth year in November, but does not take over office until January 20th. This often creates insecurity and confusing in other countries. Who rules the country in that period? The result is often that United States’ foreign policy stops. This especially becomes clearer, if the new president does not belong to the same party as his predecessor.
The whole world follows with excitement and interest the American presidential election. Everyone hopes for a positive development in the relations between the two superpowers. The Americans are more interested in what their president would do about the inflation, the unemployment, poverty, energy crisis ect.
Americans almost have a morbid interest for the presidential candidates’ private lives. The voters do not tolerate any sign of weakness neither at the candidates themselves nor with any other mem-ber of the family.
That way Senator spilled his chance to be nominated as the Democratic Party’s candidate I 1972, because he broke down in TV when a journalist confronted him with a rumor, about his wife being an alcoholic.
The president’s power is enormous as regards to foreign policy. It’s more limited as to domestic policy, where he has to share the power with the congress. The legislative power lies with the con-gress, which consists of two chambers; the senate (two senators from each state) and the representa-tives’ house (where the states are represented in proportion to their population.)
The special about the American system is that even if the Republican Party has great majority in both chambers, the congress can very well vote against the republican president. ……… it is a wonder a if anyone would run for the presidential election in the US.
