English poem help..

Hi, anyone who can me help with this poem... I can't figure out who/what "they" are and don't know the meaning of last stanza, especially this line: "It deepens like a coastal shelf"...
please help.. Thx!
They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.
But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.
Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

"They fuck you up, your mum and dad". "They" er altså din vores mødre og fædre. Jeg tror "Coastal Shelf" skal referere til nedsynkende bjerge, da shelf betyder noget lignende undergrund. Jo flere generationer der går jo dybere kommer disse fejl eller denne lidelse til at ligge i mennesket. Derfor skal man vælge ikke selv at få børn...
