1.
Fear can be described as a very unpleasant feeling, you can for an example be afraid of a person or afraid of something invented. Fear can develop into a phobia and if you do not take care of the problem it can leads into social problems or it can make a person do awful things, for an example commit suicide. But why are people afraid and what makes us afraid – is it only something we make up in our heads?
Jon is afraid of diving. The fear of diving evolves into the fear of dying. His fear is so strong that it destroys him mentally and in the end he can not take it anymore and he meets his fear face to face; he chooses to give up.
The short story takes place in Egypt. Jon, the main character, is on a trip where he has to learn diving when he is in Egypt he lives on a hotel. Jon is a forty years old Londoner and he is absolutely not sporty. He has a girlfriend but he is not very happy because they seems to be breaking up. He is a journalist working for a magazine; his boss told him to go diving, to write an article about scuba-diving, and he had to go because he was only second string journalist so he could not just say “No, thank you” to his boss – then he could loose his job. Jon also has a low self-confidence and he is afraid of being a failure, he do not have the courage to say no to his boss when he tells him to go diving.
Besides all the “normal” facts about Jon we are also told that he is nervous in surroundings he is not used to and that he has a problem with alcohol.
“A deluge of Egyptian porters was trying to wrench Jon’s bags away, angling for baksheesh. He shook hands with each one and handed out crumpled currency. Then he locked the door of his room against them, and tucked into his duty-free”1
So already in the beginning we get to know that Jon drinks. Later in the short story we find out that he is trying to escape what he is afraid of. But we are also told that he feels uncertain in some situations – maybe it leads to the fear?
But what has the headline to do with the story? Well, yellow is the color of cowardice and also when you do not dare something. Jon does not dare diving. In the end he dies – he commits suicide and thinks that the others cannot call him yellow anymore, what he does not know is that the suicide makes him more yellow because he just not said no to dive.
In this short story the ocean symbolizes the death. The ocean and the death are both a big bunch of emptiness and nothingness. Jon also sees the nature as death.
The person in Langston Hughes’s poem “Suicide’s Note” sees the death as love and do not thinks it is dangerous but it is calm and good. Jon’s opinion to the death is exactly the opposite. He thinks the death is dangerous and he is afraid to die. The two different opinions shows that people are very different and that each person sees the nature in different perspectives.
In the picture “The Sea of Ice” by Caspar David Friedrich we see the ocean as destroying and dangerous it really looks like death on this picture. In a way the picture is very touching because it shows how dangerous and violent it can be and it is a very big contrast to when we see the ocean in the summer where it is very relaxing. Maybe Jon only sees the ocean like it is on the picture – as destroying – like death.
No one can tell why people get scared of something, but it could be something they have experienced in their childhood or something a person has invented in his minds and then it has developed into something bigger and in the end the person fears it more than anything in the world. Everyone have tried to be afraid, to feel the fear. The fear is probably the most spread torment in the world.

2.
“Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey”
The story is written by a man named William Wordsworth. He is describing the sight of nature in which the human kind is included.
The poem is from the romantic period written by one of the most important writers in the romantic period. The romantic period believed in God and nature as a connection. One of the important understandings in the romantic period is that the human and the nature belongs together and it is in the nature the human find God – a divine presence in the nature.
If we compare this with “Yellow” it is a total different sight on the nature. Jon sees the nature as death and he do not feel very comfortable with it. In “Yellow” the nature is the beginning of nothingness and it is in the nature where everything is being dissolved and the harmony is gone – it is like God has left the “building” and Jon is alone since there is no guidance from above. And in the romantic period everything about the nature is fantastic and if you need help from God you can search for help in the nature. The two texts shows how the sight of nature has changes through time: from the romantic understanding to a modern person’s sight on the nature.

1.
- "you can for an example" enten skriver man "you can, for example" eller "you can, as an example".. your choice!
- "and if you do not take care of the problem it can leads into social problems", der skal ikke flertal på leads.
- "make up in our heads?" her ville jeg nok bruge minds frem for heads.
- "He has a girlfriend but he is not very happy because they seems to be breaking up" seems er forkert.
- "he do not have the courage", her skal du have fat i does not. Der er flere steder hvor du har problemer med do og does.
- "or something a person has invented in his minds" minds skal ikke stå i flertal her.
- "Everyone have tried to be afraid", du skal have fat i "_har_ prøvet"

2.
- "most important writers in the romantic period" of the romantic period
- "and the nature belongs together", der skal ikke s på belong her
- "If we compare this with “Yellow” it is a total different sight on the nature" of the nature
- "and he do not feel very comfortable with it" ville nok bruge et andet ord for very.

Overall meget godt skrevet - for hele teksten gælder det, en tur rundt med kommapenslen.

Mvh
