Dyrebeskyttelsesforeninger anslår, at kosmetikindustrien årligt af prøver sine produkter på 200.000 dyr. Disse oplysninger fik for nylig en række politikere i Europaparlamentet til at anbefale, at der indføres et totalt forbud mod dyreforsøg1 inden for Unionen. ”Et sådant forbud vil redde mange tusinde dyr fra unødig lidelse,” udtaler en dansk politiker. Andre mener, at man stadig bør kunne afprøve nye kosmetiske produkter på dyr, bl.a. for at sikre at forbrugerne får de bedst mulige varer.
Endvidere synes de fleste politikere, at kosmetiskfabrikanterne bør give mere detaljerede oplysninger om produkternes indhold. Men kun et mindretal kan blive enige om, at forbrugerne også skal have oplyst, om der er anvendt dyreforsøg.
Problemerne vil måske blive løst ved hjælp af ny teknologi, idet en gruppe forskere hævder, at et stadig større antal dyreforsøg i fremtiden vil blive erstattet af simulationsprogrammer. Sådanne programmer vil kunne forudsige eventuelle bivirkninger, og følgelig vil afprøvning på dyr blive overflødig.

Animal protection organisations estimate that the cosmetics industry tests their products on 200,000 animals. These bits of information recently made a number of politicians, from the European Parliament, recommended that tests on animals should be completely prohibited within the Union. A Danish politician says, “Such a prohibition will save many thousands of animals from unnecessary suffering”. Others think that there should still be a possibility of testing new cosmetic products on animals and one of the reasons being that the consumers are guaranteed the best possible merchandise. Furthermore, most politicians think that the cosmetics manufacturers ought to give more details about the contents of their products. However, only the minority can come to an agreement on whether or not the consumers should be informed about tests on animal. The problems will perhaps be solved with the help of a new technology because a group of scientists claim that in the future an increasing number of tests will give place to simulation programs. Such programmes could predict possible side effects and consequently tests on animals would be superfluous.
