With individualism I assume something along the lines of John Keating's free thinking and pedagogical ways of teaching. Keating stood out as contrast to the way things were done at the boarding school. He came with fresh ideas to the environment (disliking the way English was being taught) and met resistance from the rest of the faculty (one professor even tells Keating that why bother teaching them to think on their own since there was the underlying assumption amongst the faculty that they were not Da Vincis nor Eliots). Keating had the belief that children all had the underlying capacity for creative, independent thinking and tried to show this to his pupils. He also met resistance from some of the students (jf. the red headed guy who occupies the role as an antagonistic figure in the story, and who later rats on his friends). Conservatives is what you would call the teachers and parents of the school.
