This study examines the English foreign affairs in 1939 to 1942 and shows the problems which Churchill had to deal with during the war.
In 1940 Winston Churchill became prime minister. Europe is crushed underneath the boot of Hitler. Therefore Churchill had some serious problems he got to deal with, including protecting the country from Nazi-Germany and to get USA into an active position as an allied.
In 1941 Churchill succeeds through continuous requests to get USA closer as an allied. First he manages to make a lent-lease programme with the USA and later the Atlantic Charter. Finally in late in 1941 it succeeds to drag USA into war with Germany.
The three speeches of Churchill, present his points of views through parts of the war. The “War speech” focuses on the fact that the war isn’t the fault of the English people, only Hitler is to blame.
“Blood, Toil, Tears and Sweat” is a speech which in he first explains his coming plans in the Government and later explains the goal of Great Britain. Namely Victory at all costs.
In “You Do Your Worst And We Will Do Our Best” Churchill is praising the inhabitants for holding out and fighting back. It’s a speech made to keep up the tremendous courage.
By analysing the speeches they show how great Churchill masters the rhetoric knowledge through major use of oratorical effect.
