“What He Was Like”:
“What He Was Like” is fiction and is written of William Maxwell.
The theme in the short story “What He Was Like” is to revealing secrets and growing old.
The story deals with honesty, family relationship, and what lies beneath.
The main issue in the short story is; do you ever get to know a person completely?
The story begins with the father writes diary, he always does, because then he could get rid of all his thoughts, no one know him like his diary does. In real life he is a smiling and happy man/father, but he lives a completely other life in his diaries. He did not write kind things, but he does not care. No one he writes about should read in his diary anyway.
“his envy on the children that he saw running down the street” (p. 87 l 23-24) He has a difficult time growing old, he knows that his days soon will be over, and he feels like he has not lived his life jet. He does really not accept the old age.
When he sees the children running around, it hurts him because then he realizes how old he is. He thinks that he has not appreciated his life, as he should.
His wife does not want to read in his diary, she says: “I was married to your father for forty-six years and I know what he was like.” (p. 89 l.7-8) I think the mother is afraid to see what lies beneath. When her husband not talks to her but instead write in his diary, she knows that it is something, he does not want her to know. She accepts that her husband do not want anybody to read them, and he trust at his wife. Even though he is death she does not want to read them, and he count on his wife so he did not want to throw the diaries out. Now when he is dead she does not want to spoil the memory she had about him.
“But she loved her father, and felt a very real desire to know what he was like as a person and not just as a father.” (p. 89 l 11-12)
On the other hand their daughter really wants to read his diaries. She is curious to see how he was as a human instead of a father. He is a very loving father, so according to the daughter’s expectations he must be as loving and caring like he is in the father role, she does not think about the consequences reading his diary.
When the daughter reads his diary, she fells like an uncompleted person. All the things she did not knew about her father, he was a whole other person than she thought. He was one of the persons who were closest to her, and if she cannot trust at him, then who can she trust?
She is alone, she feels like she cannot trust anyone anymore, even her husband.
In text 5 “Secrets in Marriage” they define marriage and tell how it should be. Trust and honesty are properly the most important “ingredients” in building an intimate relationship between husband and wife. Honesty is many things, you do not have to tell everything what comes up in your mind or dreams etc. If you do not tell your husband/wife about your privacy and thoughts, then you do not lie. Some things are just private and you want to keep them to your self. You do not decide what thoughts you have. In the short story “What He Was Like”, he does not share his secrets with his wife, he writes it down in his diaries. He does that because he does not want his wife to know all the bad things about him and all his bad thoughts. The most important thing to him is his diary, and he trust at his wife. This is honesty and trust. You maybe not know all the bad things about your husband, but do you really want to?
He is faithful to his wife, and he loves her. You cannot expect more of your marriage. In the text “Secrets in Marriage” it says that “the sense of a private me is important to many individuals” And the father/man in the story “What He Was Like” feel exactly the same.
On the picture “text 7” there are a lot of watches and a man on the picture. The watches represents the time and to grow old. He is alone and looks lonely. He is in that age where you are to stubborn to change his lifestyle. For example, he has a lot of small things, something he has taken together through his life. He does not want to through some of his things out, even though it does not have a lot of value, because it is memories from his entire life.
He just sits there stubborn and rotten knowing that his life soon will be over.
In the story “What He Was Like” reminds a lot of that picture although he writes diary in the story, but still it annoyed him that his days soon will be over.
Many old people feel sorry for themselves. They do not think about all the good time they had in life, only the bad things, and the fact that they have lived their life.
