The American Occupation of England.
During the second World War you could hear the following story about two american soldiers. One of them says. “We better see Coventry. There’s a naked woman who is riding around the streets on a horse”. The other one answers. “Let us get going. I have not seen a horse for years”. Winston Churchill, who was the British primeminister during the war, is said to have amused himself quite a lot over this story which speaks more about the american soldiers’ influence on the everyday life of the english people than long treatises.
During the second World War more than 3 million americans were stationed in England for shorter or longer time; and no less than 1½ million soldiers stayed on the south british shore in the months leading to the D-day in june 1944. Their presence had an enormous influence on the British society. Not only did the americans summon the consumer economy, but it also turned the British ideas about moral upside down. If anything was left of the moral from the Victorian age they effectively decapitated it.
