Killing of girl infants

Thousands of newborn Indian girls only live a few hours after the birth. They get killed, because social norms say that sons are a prize, whereas girls are a burden. It gives one status when you get a boy and at the same time it gives you a social security in the age of the parents. Girl infants are on the other hand looked upon as an expense, because the parents have to pay a huge dowry, when they one day get married of.

The killings are often done by the father or the mother-in-law, who remove the new born daughter from the mother or force her to kill her own child. Usually the kills have taken place by giving the newborn girls poisoned milk or plant extracts, or they choke in salt or sand. Rude absence is an other cause that is often seen , and many new born girls often die of banal illness’ as for example (diarré?).

50 years ago killing of girl infants was only a phenomenon among some tribes in India. In a new report, it appears, that there in the last 20 years has been a huge increase in the number of killings of girls. According to the report the killings take place in different places in South Asia, but especially in villages in the Indian states, Tamil Nadu, Bihar and Rajasthan, killings of new born girls often happen. The killings are rarely reported, but the police knows what is going on.
