AN AMERICAN HERO

A young electronic engineer witch name is Bernhard Goetz walked a morning in December 1984 down in New York’s subway on his way to work, and when the train came in to the platform, he walked into an almost empty carriage. Among the passengers there were four young blacks. One of them asked Goetz, how he was. >>excellent<< Goetz answered.
In almost all the other places in the world, such a talk would be completely harmless, but in an underground train on Manhattan it can be bad luck. According to Goetz, two of the young men stand up and got nearer him, as one of them said: >>Give me five dollars.<< Goetz knew immediately, that they would hit him.
This situation is well-known for all the people who are dependent by the public transport on the way to and from their daily work in New York. The city’s economic crisis and reductions in 1970’s have result in catastrophic conditions in the old underground system. The carriages is bad illuminated, dirty and bad maintained, frequent there turns up fire in the tunnels, and the more than one billion people, which yearly uses the underground, fears the daily trip. It’s actually surprising, that inhabitants in one of the biggest cities in the world has to (må finde sig I sådanne forhold.) ????
Bernhard Goetz did, what many wished, they dare to do. He unzipped his zipper in his windbreaker and took out his Smith & Wesson 38 calibre revolver. He pleaded however later, that he didn’t hade in mind to shoot, but when he saw the smile on the face of one of his nuisances, he lost composure and shot. One of the men got serious injured, when a bullet hit him in his spinal column and paralyzed him from waist and down, while the other three only got shallow flesh wound.
