Fiction versus non-fiction

13. april 2008 af luktho88 (Slettet)
Hey derude

Jeg har fået følgende engelsk oppgave:

"In a short essay (200-300 words) discuss how fiction differs from non-fiction in terms of expressing ideas."

Fiction versus non-fiction

Throughout history human kind has found many ways of expressing themselves. Body language,
speech, drawings and paintings, and literature are some of the most commonly used, but there are
certainly many more ways of communicating and expressing ideas. Ever since people were able to
write, writing has been one of the most beloved ways of expressing ideas. Some express their ideas
through fiction, while others choose to use non-fiction.

Fiction includes short stories, novels, fantasy, and poetry and is invented, such as the short story “Abduction”. “Abduction” tells a tragic story about the relationship between a brother and a sister. Non-fiction is based on reality and is often in form of a documentary writing, article, biography, historical writing, and or a chronicle. The fictive story “Abduction” may have been inspired by the non-fictional research done by the Australian psychologist and psychiatrist Alfred Adler about siblings and how they compete against each other for affection and even power. Or perhaps the author Shelagh Delaney was inspired by events from her own life as the content of her story easily could have taken place in real life.

It is impossible to choose if fiction is better than non-fiction or visa versa. Some people might
prefer one over the other, but that does not necessarily mean it is the best. Some ideas are better
expressed through fiction in novels, short stories, lyrics, and such. Other ideas are better if printed
in newspapers or other sources of non-fictional material. It should not be a competition between the
two as some ideas are obviously better suited for one or the other. If the idea is good, then there is
only one question left to ask if one wants to print it – should it be fiction or non-fiction?
