Good Girl
Religion has always been a reason among people to fight. All over history examples of great wars fought over religion finds its way to the surface. Just before I started this paper I saw the movie “kingdom of heaven” about the crusades to Jerusalem and about how religion combine and separates people often stronger then nationalities.
This conflict, however quite smaller then the crusades, is being fought in Northern Ireland, where both the Catholics and the Protestants wants to control the land.
The short story I’ve read is called “Good Girl” and has been written by Marita Conion-McKenna.
The novel is published in 2001 where the battles of North Ireland still lay fresh in the back of the mind.
The story take place in North Ireland, and is about a girl called Chrissy. She and her family is Catholic. Because of the disturbances between the two religious groups fighting, people have been making some kind of religious ghettoes and very few are living along with some one from another belief.
Chrissy is a sweet and pretty, young girl. She works as a babysitter and it seams like she is quiet intelligent. She isn’t at all active in the conflict, it seams like she don’t even think it exist. Chrissy is as any other teenager fighting with her sisters instead. She has a younger sister called Gamma. Chrissy is a role model for Gamma and she knows it. They have a good relationship and even though Chrissy thinks that Gamma can be too curious some time she still love her. Chrissy also have another sister called Anna, she is nineteen but very grown up. She is almost like another mother for Chrissy.
The whole momentum of the story is Chrissys relationship to a protestant boy.
His name is Ian. They have met at a school debate and they have been hanging out since.
When the story takes place, Chissy is going out to meet Ian. He doesn’t show up where they have planed to meet. So when some girls that she knows pass by and says that he is down by the river, then she follows them to the river.
Down by the river the girls lock her in, in a shed. They torture her because of her relationship to Ian.
After some hours is she being find by her sister Anna and Anna’s boyfriend who takes her home. When she is lying in her bed recovering, she writes a letter to Ian and tall Gamma to deliver it for her. When Gamma returns with the letter and tell that Ian is to busy to se Chissy, Chissys heart is broken.
As I mentioned earlier the conflict between the two religions is a big problem in North Ireland. And Chissy a Catholic girl to be dating a protestant boy is something that no one thinks is a good idea. We are being told that Eiiish dad is in jail for making a bomb. When you know how the battles were being fourth, it is a possibility that Eiishs dad had been a fighter for the catholic believers. Therefore is it very natural to think that Eiish not only has had a rough childhood, but also has been taught that the protestant is the root to all evil.
Another reason for the attack on Chissy might be that Ian’s father has been Lawyer against several catholic fighters. For example Eiiish dad, who has been set away for over ten years.
I do think that the strangest part of the story is Ian. Why is it that he does not show up to the date, and why don’t he want to se her afterwards?
He might not want to se her because of what happened to her. So that he don’t wants her to be heart again. But then again why doesn’t he show up to the date. I don’t really think that he has been planning it. Why should he? First of all he is a protestant and therefore he is probably not talking too Eiish. He might not even know her. I do think that the real reason for him not to except the letter is because he is going with his friends whom he doesn’t want to know anything about the relationship. I do think that the most believable theory is that he has not been able to make the date, might because of homework, and that he for her own sake don’t wants to se her to protect her.
The title “Good Girl” describes very well what the story is about. A good girl is a girl who is doing what she is being told, and what other people expect from her. I do personally think that Chissy now is aware about the conflict and that she from now on will do as expected, and be a “Good Girl”.

Der skal ihvertfald ikke et komma i linje 14, første sætning :] ..
Ellers er den god nok. Der er ikke stavefejl, men jeg må indrømme at jeg ikke har kigget den rigtig godt igennem .. Jeg vil tro at du har lavet små kongruensfejl, såsom "the story take place" ..
