Sir Anthony Blunt is probably one of the best known spies in recent English history. In the thirties he studied at the university in Cambridge. Here he became very interested in Stalin’s Marxism. He genuinely meant that the Marxism could be used as an effective weapon against Hitler. Therefore he was quickly convinced to be a Russian spy, together with some of his very best friends from the university.
In the beginning of the forties Blunt was involved in counter-espionage and in that period he regularly sent valuable information to the Russians. From 1945-1978 Blunt worked hard and conscientiously in favour of the royal family, or in the favour of whom? His job was to look after the royal works of art. He did this job well and he frequently wrote very knowledgably about art in the papers.
Sir Anthony Blunt was the time accused of being a spy in 1951 and during the next eight years he was interrogated none less than eleven times. But despite the fact that they asked him some very unpleasant questions, he stubbornly insisted that he was completely innocent. And the evidence against him wasn’t good enough to prosecute him. Therefore, in 1964 the authorities took the surprising decision to promise Blunt a safe-conduct, if he cooperated loyally with them in their further investigations. Afterwards Blunt confessed reluctant his crime. The queen’s private secretary received the unusual advice to let Sir Anthony Blunt keep his high post in her majesties service. It may seem strange, but in that way they completely avoided that >>moles<< (spies) would leap for the USSR or damage a further investigation in the case.
