American holidays
The fifty states have only five national holidays in common namely Christmas Day, New Years Day, Thanksgiving Day, Labor Day and of course the Independence Day the fourth of July. On these days is banks, post offices and public offices are closed.
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. Some people go to church and for most it is a day where the whole family gathers. Then they eat the traditional turkey with sweet potatoes and maize. They commemorate on this day the English pilgrims, who went on shore in Plymouth, Mass in 1621 and who started this tradition the year after. The colonists had survived the first strict winter and were thankful to have crops, they could harvest and eat. Therefore they came up with the idea of thanksgiving.
The first Monday in September is Labor Day which many still celebrate with procession in the streets. It was originally unions which made the day for a holiday – in honor for the working people. For most the Labor Day today also means the summer’s end. The fourth July is in a way USA’s Birthday. On this date in 1776 the Declaration of independence was signed by the thirteen English colonies, which required freedom from the English government. The people often celebrate the Independence Day with an excursion they listen to patriotic speeches and look at the parade. The evening ends typically ends with spectacular fireworks. Other holidays are for example Martin Luther’s birthday the third Monday in January, which the Congress did it to a public holiday in 1986. The President’ Day is usually celebrated the third Monday in February, especially in honor of the presidents Washington and Lincoln. Finally is the last Monday in May the Memorial Day, were the Americans commemorate those who died in war.
