Mr. and Mrs. Manders and their son Charles, are heading for St. Edwards Preparatory School. The family is visiting the school, for to decide if Charles will be attending next term. Charles is very anxious. The Headmasters Wife, Margaret Spokes, welcomes them, and they are talking about the school and its qualities. The Headmaster arrives, and Margaret takes Charles to the common room. She introduces Charles to his potential classmates, and leaves him alone. Charles finds himself in a shower of questions, and he doesn't not get a chance to answer any of them. While the classmates are jabbing he is getting absent-minded, but one intimidating sentence brings him back to reality; “next term, we’ll mash you, we always mash new boys. Margaret brings him back to the office where his parents are waiting. On their way home, Mr. and Mrs. Manders are discussing, but Charles is reticent and silent he thinks on the sentence; “we’ll mash you”.
