Rumspringa, or “running around”, is the term used to describe the period of adolescence Amish experience starting at around age 16. Rumspringa has been described in books and films, to varying degrees of accuracy.
There are numerous misconceptions about Rumspringa, which is a formative time for Amish youth.

The threat of being shunned must be a driving fear in the life of anyone who belongs to an Amish community. The Amish are brought up to speak German in the home, although they also learn English in their schools. Meidung basically means to be ousted or shunned. The Amish have certain tradition based terms such as ordnung, meidung, and rumspringa that are spiritual concepts and physical manners essential to their way of life. The ordnung is the biggest one - it is, in completion, the rules, traditions and basic beliefs of their community. Ordnung basically means "order" in German.
 

 Rumspringa: It is an Amish tradition that the youngsters at the beginning of adulthood is given a time to travel the world and live with other people. It is expected then that the young person after a while either choose life outside the Amish or life in the Amish. More than 4 out of 5 choose the life in the Amish.

Shunning: If a teenager choices the American life rather than Amish life, he will be shunned from the Amish community. Which means his family and the Amish community will refuse to speak to him or associate with him ever again. They say, that the shunning for them is their last way of showing you that they love you. They think that you're breaking a promise that you made to the Amish church.
