Nick’s dad, a doctor, sets out to attend a squaw in labor. Accompanied by Nick and Uncle George, he arrives at the Indian camp and finds the woman in a cabin on a bunk bed. Her husband, lying injured above her, does not take part in the labor. Because of complications, Nick’s dad decides to perform a C-section with a jack knife by which he manages to deliver the baby successfully. When he then turns to the husband, it appears that he is dead from cutting his throat. In order the spare Nick the sight of a dead body, his dad sends him out of the cabin, but by then Nick has already seen it. The story ends with Nick questioning his father about childbirth and the suicide, and Nick is quite sure that he never wants to die.
