The paper examines women’s positions in the late 1800s society and explains their role in the marriage as well. The paper describes women from all parts of the society’s everyday life, their chores and what were expected of them.The women’s role in society is investigated through various books and an analysis of Herman Bang’s short story “Hjemme” with a particularly emphasis on women’s position in the marriage. It concludes that women in the late 1800’s society were expected to become good housewives who stayed home and managed the household, took care of the children and showed her husband respect and humbleness.
