One of the major themes in this short story is definately forgiveness. Kenny is so desperate to have his mother’s forgiveness so their lives can continue but she doesn’t know what to do. It is very hard for her to forgive and pretend that nothing really happend and Kenny is still her little boy. It is impossible eventhough this is her biggest wish. The Bible says that you have to forgive no matter what, that is one of the most powerful quality a human being has been blessed with. But I think there is a limit for forgiving each other. Kenny has to learn from his lesson and in some way he has to prove that he will never do terrible things again. Myrna has no trust towards Kenny, and he has to build this trust again before she can forgive him. In some way I don’t think that Myrna would ever be able to forgive her son and if she does she will not treat him as her son. She has moved away for one week and in the note she has left for Kenny, she has written that he has to be gone when she returns. “Dear Kenny, I’m sorry. I just can’t be your mother right now. I will be back in one week. Please be gone. Much love, Myrna.” – line 187-191. Maybe Myrna will forgive him because she has written that she can’t be his mother right now, but she wants him to leave forever. She will think of him as her son but never mention him infront of her friends and she will not have a special relationship to him.
