USA’s President
The American president is chosen every fourth year in November, but is not to take office before the 20. January. This often creates confusion in other countries. Who is running the country in this period? This often results in USA’s foreign policy coming to a halt. This is especially the case if the new president does not belong to the same party as his predecessor.
The whole world follows the American presidential election with excitement and interest. Everyone is hoping for a positive development between the two superpower’s relations. The Americans themselves are much more interested in what their president is going to do about the inflation, unemployment, poverty, energy crisis etc.
The Americans have a borderline sick interest in the presidential candidates private life. The voters tolerate no sign of weakness, whether it is in the candidate himself or any of his family members. That is how the Senator Muskie of Maine threw away his chance at becoming the nominated candidate of the Democrat’s party in 1972, because he broke down on TV, when a journalist confronted him with the rumour that his wife was an alcoholic.
The President’s power is enormous in regards to foreign policy. It is more limited in regards to domestic policy, where he has to share the power with the congress. The legislative power lies with the congress, which consists of two chambers: the senate (two senators from each of the 50 states) and the House of Representatives (where the states are represented in comparison to their population).
What makes the American system special is, that even though the e.g. Republican party has a majority in both chambers, the congress is still very capable of voting against an republican president. It is in general a wonder that anyone wants to run for presidential election in USA.
